$1 Million in Meter Rebates Distributed to MAGSA Landowners with More Still Available

MAGSA has distributed approximately $1 million in rebates to landowners through its Meter and Telemetry Rebate Program. The program helps reduce out-of-pocket costs for landowners who install the required water measurement equipment and telemetry services. 

Why are Meters Required?
MAGSA adopted a Groundwater Metering Policy in February 2021 and related Implementing Rules & Regulations. These require landowners with wells producing more than 2 acre-feet of water per year to install meters and telemetry systems by January 31, 2025.

Measuring groundwater use is critical to:

  • Complying with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA)
  • More effectively Managing groundwater supplies 
  • Supporting future water supply solutions like Aquaterra, the Expansion Project, and a future Groundwater Marketing Program 

Penalties for Noncompliance
At MAGSA’s board meeting in February 2025, Board members approved a memorandum outlining enforcement actions for landowners who did not meet the January 31, 2025 installation deadline. Penalties for noncompliance include monthly fees and, eventually, the shutdown of non-compliant wells. Landowners can read the enforcement guidelines here.

Landowners who have not complied with the meter installation requirements can still be eligible for a rebate on a first-come-first served basis while the funding lasts. Landowners are encouraged to contact an irrigation dealer and initiate the meter installation.
